Copenhagen after hours – feed your soul, feed your body
Mieszkanie
Breakfast in the hotel restaurant. Ania's face confirms that it tasted good. The equipment of this place are mostly Muuto products.
Food
I love to eat. And so it happened that the people closest to me are also my food mates and when we travel we choose locations that are rich in culinary experiences. With Ania Kupis, the owner of Scandinavian Living who invited me to come to Copenhagen, we spontaneously decided on places we just liked while roaming the city.
We got it right everytime. At least in my opinion. Ania complained a little, that the meals were a bit hominy like – that whether served in a bowl or on a plate, all the elements of a dish had a hardly recognizable consistency… It’s true in a way, but not really. A lot of the ingredients served are potatoes, eggs, meat, often in the form of meat loaves, but also vegetables, and sauce, a lot of sauce. There are also sandwich variations, which make for a dominant lunch menu item. Called smørrebrød, their bread is hidden under a stack of add ons, in e.g. fish, including herring of course, scrambled eggs, or even potato salad.
That’s paradise for me, especially when the outdoor temperatures are lower than 20 degrees. Add to this some local beer, the golden treasure of Denmark, and the 2018 fall-winter menu is taken care of.
Tartar, ground meat under a cushion of fried onion and a fried egg. To this young potatoes, and everything floating in a sauce. He found it for autumn / winter.

It also wouldn’t be me, if I hadn’t thrown myself at sweets. But these didn’t really get me excited. The local delicacy is licorice, often with an addition of anise, making for a combination I just wasn’t attracted to. However, there is one variation that is bearable – licorice balls coated in chocolate.
Sightseeing
We had a quite busy trip schedule, but I just could not oversee this place. Design Museum Danmark with a great cafe and a summer outdoor area in the garden.
Created in 1890, opened five years later and in its current location, the building of a former hospital, since 1926. The permanent collection consists of objects from a wide selection of design, starting with ceramics, through furniture, to fashion and fabrics.
I was especially enchanted by the journey through the 20th century, which presented the development of Danish design from avant-garde to modern times. We will find here, among others, the inspiration the Danes drew from the culture and art of Japan. Interpreted anew until this day in all areas of design, it’s visible in the fabric patterns, ceramics, furniture and architecture.
The exhibition could not, of course, lack the classics of Danish design. An absolute rarity is the display of over 100 chairs – icons, each of which has been displayed in a separate, illuminated box with detailed information starting from the history of creation to the exact dimensions.
Additionally, there is the Fashion & Fabric exhibition, which presents the last 400 years of the development of the fashion industry in Denmark and a collection of porcelain from around the world (Yes, there’s also a few objects from Poland!).
Temporary exhibition SINUS by Pearli Pigaos was also open during our visit. Fabrics woven from thin metal threads spread in the museum space generated sound in reaction to the viewers’ touch and movement. A very beautiful installation, especially in the context of the space in which it was located.
Shopping
What you don’t know about me yet is that I’m a person who always has a plan and a list. Even concerning fashion. I do not buy things “for later”, “because I might lose/put on weight” or when “I do not know what it will go with, but I’ll take it because it’s beautiful”. I already have that covered. Since I worked fashion and beauty photo sessions, with current focus on interior photography, I have had, and still do, the opportunity to empirically experiment with products of virtually any brand. I do not get heart palpitations seeing objects, maybe just a small arrhythmia sometimes, but it must be something exquisite. This does not mean, however, that I’m never impressed. Admiration overwhelms me quite often, I love to look and touch, but I am now a strongly self-controlled type of a costumer.
And so there’s a list on my refrigerator and a trench coat was listed on it for over two years. It’s raining. There are cyclists. Not just any cyclists, rather everyday type of cyclists, driven by practical and empirical experience. There is Rains the Danish brand of course, that specializes in rainwear. And then there’s the fact that the Illums Bolighus shopping paradise is separated from the Muuto showroom by the distance of just one block, so you can easily imagine the result. I tried all of them and left with THE one. After returning to Warsaw, I dreamt about rain just so that I could put on my trench coat. It actually ended up being a heavy storm on the way to a birthday party and completely soaked shoes. As they say, be careful what you wish for…

Budget
Two days is too short of a time to get to know a city, but it was enough time for me to say that I like it a lot. Seems like it’s time to plan another trip…
